Community History

Udupi is one of the districts in Karnataka State, Brahmavar village, is situated in Udupi district. Brahmavar is a village surrounded by many Hindu temples but the people are educated and many are settled in other parts of the world for their livelihood. Karunalaya, Home for the aged and the destitute at Brahmavar, is founded by the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO) of the districts of south Karnataka and Udupi. Karunalaya is administered by the Provincial of Karnataka Capuchin Province, is the President of the Trust, and is responsible for the matters connected with the personnel and the administration of the home.

On 20th May 2000, four sisters formed the first community namely Sr.Pushpa as superior and Sr. Agnes. A, Sr. Emilia, Sr.Jackuline D’costa being community members, they were accompanied by Sr. Elsy K.Y Delegate Superior and Sr.Maria Rosa Councilor. Two sisters were to work in Karunalaya, old age home and the other two sisters to teach in the parish school.
