Curtorim Community

Curtorim is a village in Salcete Taluk in South Goa, District of Goa state, India. It has a predominately Catholic population. The church of St. Alex is the main features of the village. It is one of the oldest churches in Goa. It was built in 1597 amidst a scenic natural backdrop of a lake. There are around 13,400 Catholics in the village. The unique feature of Curtorim is the various water bodies. The village has 5 big lakes and 16 small ponds

Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate landed in Curtorim, Batora in 1988 with a kind and generous donation of the The house and property by Mr. Cecil and Mrs. MatildaD’Cruzto Rev. Sr. Asuncion Herero who was the pioneer to begin the Goa Mission. The property and the house were donated for the purpose of doing social activities and whatever Congregation desires to reach out to the society. Since they had no children, it was completely handed over to the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate.

Sr. Catherine Manekanti and Sr. Nirmala Madanu were the first members to reside in the house. The community was an extension of Cavelossimcommunity.After some years the house was closed due to lack of sisters and to study the mission.In the year 1996-97, the house was renovated and on 19th Dec 1997, the Chapel was blessed and the community was established as formation house. Sr. Lucy Augustine was Superior and formator, Sr. Josefine Monterio and Sr. Gracy Fernandes were the first members of the community.
